Alone is about the relationship between urban spaces and a single person.
With this series, I combined my passion for street photography and my love for minimal, abstract compositions, clear lines, and high contrast.

Perspective
This piece is an absolute favorite of mine. I think it’s because the lines and composition aren’t created by light and shadow, as usual, but by the layering of the spatial elements. The perspective is so unique that it almost creates visual confusion about the actual space and how these layers are formed. This creates an abstract, almost surreal artwork. And the unique tiles with their particular coloring do the rest.

Bright
I love the clean shapes of this image. It combines triangles, squares, and lines into a minimalistic abstract work of art. The bright splash of color completes the composition. And of course, hopefully, he leaves the university a little brighter than yesterday.

Leaving
In fact, I don’t even know if they’re coming or leaving. The light of this hallway magically attracted me, and honestly, I just got lucky that someone passed by. What fascinates me about the picture is the warm, cozy atmosphere, accompanied by a certain melancholy because of the person walking away. And visually, I love the wall of light and the layering of the different vertical patterns. And because it is a horizontal framing, the vertical elements work as a great counterpart.

Colossus
The scale of this shot is so enormous that it seems as if the little human is walking, completely ignored, between the stilted legs of a colossal being. Two parallel worlds coexist without really noticing each other. For me a beautiful symbol of our world, in which the cities and buildings outgrow us so much that we as individuals almost perish in them. And, of course, I loved the little splash of sunlight in a sea of darkness to highlight that one person.

Waiting
What is this man waiting for? His family? His partner? Is he shopping himself and needs a break? I had to wait a bit myself for this picture because it was a pretty busy day at the mall. But he just sat there, motionless in the sun.
I love the composition of this image created by the sunlight and the linear elements of the building. The light forms an opening in the darkness and leads the eye to him. And the golden doors frame him perfectly as the main point of interest.

Underground
I love train stations! This unique atmosphere of coming and going, always on the move, always passing through. And train stations often offer unusual architecture and extraordinary opportunities to capture reality.
Here I love the huge light source in the background and that there are almost no other lights installed at the station. The dark atmosphere and the resulting silhouettes create a mystical feeling. Leaving only the middle part visible makes the picture almost like a frame taken out of a movie. And of course, the straight lines and patterns are central elements of my art.

Energy
This work stands out a bit. On the one hand, it doesn’t radiate the melancholy typical for this series, and, on the other hand, it doesn’t consist exclusively of linear forms. And yet it fits perfectly with the theme of a person interacting with the urban environment. Especially because of the contrast between oversized buildings and the jogger, who carries out an activity that is more associated with nature. A human trapped in the concrete jungle.
Even the sun hits very differently in this one, but I just like the composition and color – the energy – of this piece very much.

Homewards
I often have a hard time with night photography, mainly because I like the sunlight so much and play with the strong contrasts to create my clean compositions.
But I truly love this piece. It is actually one of my all-time favorite shots. And It conveys everything the series stands for: Man seeks his way through oversized architecture, the melancholy feeling of being alone, and a minimalist composition to tell these stories.
And it is a very emotional piece too. He leaves the warm and protected space to step out into the darkness and find his way home.

Triangle
“Triangle” is all about composition. I love it because it’s so clean and simple, yet dynamic and playful. The division into different triangles and the contrast of the man, expanding the dark area while simultaneously invading it with his bright shirt, makes this image so wonderful. Like an abstract piece of art.
However, it took an extremely long time to land this shot. Behind the man is a huge bridge through which a lot of people walk. So I chose the framing and waited and waited to catch a single person. And finally, when he came, I was lucky enough that he was by himself and everyone else was just out of frame. He also looked sideways that a ray of sunlight fell on his face to separate him nicely from the background.
So the wait was worth it!

Cathedral
Speaking of scale. Buildings tall as cathedrals and the individual lost in the midst — alone and looking for connection.
I snapped this picture by accident and almost off the top of my wrist as I walked up the stairwell of this enormous train station. The woman also disappeared immediately afterward, and the moment was gone.
But because of the two buildings that frame her and the straight-line structure of the glass, I really love the picture — a symbol for being alone in the urban space.

Rising
This image is unique because of the extremely high proportion of negative space. About 3/4 of the picture is black, yet it looks dynamic and balanced. I love the perspective, coming deep out of the dark on the way out into the light. Full of hope and new possibilities. It seems like a way to escape from the cold and lifeless urban space, and the blue sky acts as a beacon of hope.

Rest
Urban spaces are usually quite gray and monotonous. So this is the only photo of this collection with strong colors. But I like it very much because of the unique composition created by the interaction of triangles and large surfaces. There is also an intriguing relationship between the horizontal orientation of the stairs and the dominant vertical shadow.
And all lines ultimately lead to our protagonist. Alone on this giant staircase, she chose the corner as her retreat.
